A meditation on what endures beyond forgetting
In the silent abyss, where sunlight barely dares to dance, a most unusual tree has slept for eons. Its branches stretch in an eternal embrace with the ocean, while its roots, entangled in the sea floor, keep the secrets of a distant and forgotten past.
Thus began its confessions —those that only the sea could hear.

“For centuries I have remained in this slumber, a mute witness to the dance of underwater life”, murmured the tree in the language of water and air. It remembered when, in ancient times, it had been a proud colossus upon solid ground, brushing the clouds and caressing the sun. Its leaves, green and alive, once sang the melodies of forest and wind. But an unexpected destiny had led it to this deep bed: a cataclysm, an ancestral storm that tore it from its home and laid it in the ocean’s salty embrace.
In the realm of blue silence, the tree had learned to dream through memory. Each bubble that rose from its bark whispered stories of a time when earth and sky had been its confidants. “Within my roots I still carry the trace of the sun, the scent of damp soil, the echo of human laughter”, it confessed softly. Though it slept, its dreams wandered along forgotten paths, reliving the warmth of summer and the fragility of winter.
The creatures of the sea visited it in its slumber. A silver fish glided close to its branches, as if to caress its memory; a school of fish swirled around it, casting flickers of color into the dimness. To them, in their innocent curiosity, the tree was a guardian of submerged legends —a living chronicle of existence past and present. And in return, it let its murmurs blend with the rhythm of the tides, revealing secrets of a world long faded from memory.

One night, in the ocean’s eternal twilight, the tree awoke from its long dream. Its confessions, silenced for so long, began to flow with the force of a torrent. “I have witnessed love and loss, birth and death. On land I was a symbol of life and hope; in the sea, I am the reliquary of forgotten souls. There is no oblivion in my being, only transformation and the endless search for meaning.” Its voice, deep and resonant, travelled through the depths, filling every creature of that liquid realm with wonder and solace.
The corals swayed as if bowing to listen. Even the majestic shark, lord of the shadows, paused in its errant hunt to honor that ancient confession. The tree understood, at last, that though it slept at the bottom of the sea, its essence was not lost; it had become a bridge between worlds —a testament to the resilience and continuity of life.
And so, within the ocean’s eternal murmur, the confessions of the sleeping tree became legend —a story reminding all that even in the most inhospitable places, and within the deepest silences, life continues to tell itself. For every being, no matter how still it seems, carries within a universe of memories and dreams waiting to be shared.
